BURGERTIME
Maze · Chase · BurgerTime (Data East, 1982)
Walk over the ingredients and stack three burgers before they catch you.
Free play does not count for the leaderboard: it keeps your best on this device only. Today's challenge is one run per person.
HOW IT PLAYS
The chef runs along floors and ladders walking over the ingredients of three burgers. Each ingredient has four pieces that sink as you step on them; once all four are down it drops to the floor below, and if another part of the same burger sits there it knocks that one down too, in a chain all the way to the plate. With all twelve pieces on their plates you move on to the next screen.
The sausage, the egg and the pickle chase you along the shortest path: they come in from the top edges, three to begin with (four on level 6), one more for every screen you clear (up to five), and they run faster every screen. A falling ingredient squashes whatever is under it and carries off whatever is standing on it. Touching one costs a life; peppered, they freeze for three seconds and you can walk right through them.
CONTROLS
Directions to walk the floors and climb the ladders: within 3 px of a ladder the chef lines up by himself, and if it is less than a cell away he walks to it. A sprays pepper two cells in the direction you face (on a ladder, the way you are climbing).
On screen: WALK OVER THE FOOD A: PEPPER
HOW POINTS ARE SCORED
TO SCORE MORE
· Always step on the highest ingredient of each burger: as it falls it knocks down everything below, and every fall pays 50. That way 13 to 15 full walks clear a screen; starting from the bottom takes 32 to 42.
· Let them follow you onto the ingredient before you step on its last piece: every enemy riding it makes it fall one more floor and pays 300, 600 and 900. Three at once is 1800 points from a single step.
· Pepper does not refill: five per screen plus one per bonus item, which shows up in the middle every four ingredients you drop and lasts six seconds. Save it for the ladders, where there is nowhere to dodge; whatever is left pays 50 each when the screen ends.
· If you are standing on an ingredient when another one lands on it, you ride it down one floor unharmed: it squashes whoever is underneath and gets you out of a jam without looking for a ladder.
