WAR ZONE

Stick figures · Turn-based · Online · Extra game

Turn-based stick-figure battles on terrain that breaks.

WHAT IT IS

Two teams of one to six stick figures take turns: each turn you walk a little, jump as much as you like and do one thing, fire a weapon or pass. Explosions eat the ground, a good shove sends someone into the void, and a headshot kills. There is a ten-mission campaign, six timed challenges, battles against the CPU or another person passing the phone around, and online matches one-on-one and two-on-two with room codes.

It comes from the same house as Daily Challenge and shares its look: a 320x180 screen, a 3x5 font, a 128-colour palette and synthesized chip sound, without a single audio file. Here it is free and ad-free; the Android app, with ads, is on its way.

WEAPONS

Grenade, rifle and boot unlimited; bazooka, sniper, bomb, pickaxe, platform and wall with counted ammo; the laser and the grenade launcher are earned by finishing the campaign and getting gold in all six challenges. The grenade and the boot charge while you hold the button: distance for one, force for the other.

INSPIRATIONS

War Zone is a tribute to the turn-based artillery games we grew up with: Territory War, the 2006 Flash game by Afro-Ninja Productions, with its stick figures, three weapons and ten-mission campaign, is the direct root; its online version is where the destructible terrain and the wider arsenal come from. Worms (Team17) is everyone's grandfather: the camera that opens to follow whatever flies and sudden death are its ideas. The vector look, white lines on black, nods to Vib-Ribbon (NanaOn-Sha, 1999). All the code, graphics and music are original.
