HOW THE DAY WENT

Sunday, September 27 brought ASTEROIDS, at level 3, and 10 people played.

MHARHIO won by a street with 15,870 points, 12,370 more than ELI in second. ASHLEE rounds out the podium with 3,050.

Among the top 10, the average was 3,663 points.

THE SCREEN

Screenshot of the ASTEROIDS challenge on 2026-09-27

It started on screen 1 of the 3 that ASTEROIDS has; clearing it leads on to the rest, in an order that depends on the day. It was played at level 3, with the same seed for everyone: the same enemies and the same pieces in the same order.

THE MUSIC

Tocata y fuga en Re menor, BWV 565, J. S. Bach, c. 1704.

The organ of every horror film. It is not even entirely certain it is by Bach, though the catalogue keeps it under his name.

It is in the public domain, transcribed to chiptune with square and triangle waves, the way it would sound on an Atari 2600.

ABOUT TODAY'S GAME

You turn in 16 directions from a fixed table (no trigonometry, so the replay is identical on any engine), thrust with up and shoot with FIRE. The ship keeps its inertia: there is no brake.

Large asteroids split into medium and medium into small, and the smaller the piece the more it pays.

· The score is in the small ones: breaking a large one all the way down is 20 + 100 + 400 spread out. Never leave small ones alive to chase another large one.
