HOW THE DAY WENT

Tuesday, September 29 brought BATTLE CITY, at level 4, and 10 people played.

ADRIAN won by a street with 7,300 points, 6,900 more than DAMIFLOW in second. ELI rounds out the podium with 200.

Among the top 10, the average was 800 points, and 6 finished on zero.

THE SCREEN

Screenshot of the BATTLE CITY challenge on 2026-09-29

It started on screen 2 of the 3 that BATTLE CITY has; clearing it leads on to the rest, in an order that depends on the day. It was played at level 4, with the same seed for everyone: the same enemies and the same pieces in the same order.

THE MUSIC

Sinfonía n.º 5, op. 67, primer movimiento (reducción para piano), L. van Beethoven, 1808.

The four opening notes, three short and one long, are probably the most recognisable motif in classical music.

It is in the public domain, transcribed to chiptune with square and triangle waves, the way it would sound on an Atari 2600.

ABOUT TODAY'S GAME

You defend your base from endless waves of tanks. Brick breaks to gunfire (yours included), steel does not, and water stops tanks while letting bullets through.

Three tank types: basic grey, fast white from wave 2 and heavy green from wave 3, which takes three bullets. Most head straight for the base, shooting their way in.

· You lose the same whether they kill you or the base. And the base does not respawn: when in doubt between chasing a tank and going home, go home.
