NIBBLER

Maze · Snake · Nibbler (Rock-Ola, 1982)

The maze snake: walls don't kill, the clock does.

Free play does not count for the leaderboard: it keeps your best on this device only. Today's challenge is one run per person.

HOW IT PLAYS

The maze snake where walls do not kill: at a corner it turns by itself, at a junction it stops and waits for your call. The only things that kill are biting yourself and running out of clock.

Stopping at a junction is allowed —it was in the 1982 arcade— but only for ten seconds: after that the clock starts running faster, and by eighteen it is at sixteen times. The bar at the top flashes red when that happens.

Each screen brings two more bites than the last (12 on the first) and the snake keeps its length across screens, like the original.

CONTROLS

Directions. At junctions the snake waits: you can take your time, but the clock is running.

TO SCORE MORE

· The time bonus decides the run: on screen 4, thirty spare seconds are 1200 points, more than every bite on that screen put together.

· Since walls do not kill, the best route is one long circuit that never crosses itself. Plan the whole lap before the first bite, not bite by bite.

· The snake stopping at junctions does not freeze the clock. Hesitating costs points.

· Your length travels with you to the next screen: late screens are played with a huge snake in corridors you already know. Learn the mazes, there are three.
